17 December - 75 years of the Polish Tourist and Sightseeing Society
Today is an important day in the history of PTTK - on 17 December 1950 the Polish Tourist and Sightseeing Society (Polskie Towarzystwo Turystyczno-Krajoznawcze) was founded.
Before the Polish Tourist and Sightseeing Society was created, various tourist organisations were active on Polish lands, among them two of great importance: Polskie Towarzystwo Tatrzańskie (the Polish Tatra Society, from 1873) and Polskie Towarzystwo Krajoznawcze (the Polish Sightseeing Society, from 1906). For decades they awakened a love of the mountains, of walking, and of getting to know the country, its history, nature and culture. The idea of bringing these two communities together appeared as early as the 1930s, but it was only carried out in 1950, in the difficult conditions of post-war Poland.
The history of the Polish Tourist and Sightseeing Society is a story of continuity of ideas, passion and faithfulness to values.
Thanks to the commitment of successive generations of activists, guides and members, PTTK has stood the test of time and still pursues its mission - it encourages active tourism and getting to know Poland, its culture, beauty and diversity.
