Żnin through a historian's eyes - a walk to mark International Tourist Guide Day

To mark International Tourist Guide Day we held a special walk, “Żnin through a historian's eyes”, led by the historian Mr Dariusz Skalski.
During the walk we travelled back to medieval Żnin - a town that was one of the most important urban centres of Greater Poland and a key property of the archbishops of Gniezno. Żnin most probably received its town charter in 1263 (a year after Kcynia), and as early as
1284 an archbishop's mint was operating here - proof of how much the town mattered in those days.
Walking around the market square and along the streets 700-lecia, św. Floriana, Rychlewskiego, Wodna and Śniadeckich, we uncovered the stories hidden in places we know well. We also learned that the tower commonly called Baszta Żnińska is in fact the former town hall tower.
There were also stories about Żnin's churches - Kościół św. Floriana and Kościół Najświętszej Maryi Panny Królowej Polski - and about the old town gates. The most important of them, the Toruń Gate (Brama Toruńska), set in front of the defensive walls
on the Ostrów side, was from the mid-14th century an impressive twin-towered structure with oak doors.
During the walk the President of the PTTK Pałuki Branch in Żnin, Magdalena Gabryszak, gave the guides her warmest wishes on their day.
At the end - despite the wintry weather
and passing showers - we warmed up with hot tea and coffee and something sweet, because a good atmosphere warms you best of all.
